Stats: 28.0 Miles (17th day, 336.7 miles to date)
Temp 80F, winds NE 10 to 15, Started overcast turned to partly cloudy ... another beautiful day
Had planned to ride in Down Town Chicago until Sunday morning when we heard about street closures due to a Triathlon. We changed plans to ride the next segment north ... Wauconda to Glencoe. Still, we almost called the trip off late Sunday morning because of threatening clouds and spritz.
We started on The Millennium Bike Trail near the Lake County Museum. This is on a new bike trail about 2 miles west of the published Grand Illinois Trail Routes. I suspect future issues of the GIT routes will include this segment.
1 mi - Hilly dirt track
1.0 mi - Where's Waldo shot of an Egret in a Tree
(Maybe it would be better titled Egret in the distance)
1.3 mi - Ok. Here we are
1.3 mi -In the wetlands of Millennium Park
2.6 miles from from our start, the Millennium Park bike trail joins the official Grand Illinois Trail route, and runs along the side of Hwy 173. It was bike path to mile 5.2, then onto local streets through Mundelein. The traffic was light and the drivers give us plenty of space.
6.7 mi - Stop to look at Gazebo in Mundelein
6.7 mi - It was a War Veterans Memorial
6.8 mi - Onto North Shore Bike Trail
Views along North Shore Trail
11.75 mi - Trails over Metra railroad tracks.
We stopped for a short refuel on the bridge over the Metra tracks and chetted with another couple that had stopped there as well.
14.3 There were no trail signs indicating how to get from the North Shore Trail to the Robert McClory Trail. We managed to guess right.
15.5 Were surrounded by a flock of Goldfinches at one point.
17.3 mi - Took break in this huge park just outside of Lake Forest.
Shelter Bike Trail visible across the green
Another view
19.1 Mi - The Bike Path signs disappeared again. We spotted a bicycle club out on a ride and asked directions.
22.1 Finally we worked our way to downtown Highland Park. where crowds making their way to Ravinia Very confusing getting through Highland Park.
Oddly, the trail runs through the parking lot of every train station along the route.
24.3 mi - Trail also runs past the Ravinia main entrance and through the parking lots.
We wanted to turn off the path onto west bound Lake-Cook Road. Lake Cook Road isn't marked at that point. We rode half a mile past before getting suspicious and asking a local cyclist for directions.
26.6 mi - Ravinia traffic was gridlocked along our route. Nothing was moving in any direction at stop lights. Two police officers were manually controlling the traffic signals at one 5 way intersection. We asked for directions to the Botanic Garden. They said it was half a mile down the hill, and suggested that we ride the sidewalk. They stopped all traffic so we could cross the streets. Thanks, guys.
Riding the sidewalk was the scariest part of the trip. It ran along hedges with driveways all along the half mile to the Botanic Garden.
It felt great to get into the gardens and out of the crazy traffic.
Packed and ready to go
We drove back to Wauconda to pick up the other car and stopped for a great Mexican dinner at Rancho Grande in Mundelein.
