Bass Line
Hi. My name is Larry, and this site is about my passion for playing bass.
I can't think of any instrument I'ld rather play than bass.
Nothing sounds as satisfying as those rich, deep tones.
Nothing adds as much to a song as a good bass line.
Nothing looks as cool as a bass player in action.
And if anyone out there is dancing, tapping a foot, or shaking something to the music, it's because the bass player is making things groove.
I've been playing bass for about 30 years, with much of that time spent in Chicago style blues bands. In 1994 I started the switch from a Fender and high wattage electric blues, to an upright for acoustic blues, bluegrass, rockabilly, folk, and Baroque music. In 1999 I played more gigs in restaurants, coffe shops, and book stores than in bars.
I've played roughly 100 gigs/year recently on the bar, coffee shop and book store circuit, though I cut back to less than one a month in 2004, and essentially retired from bar bands in 2005.
I still play in an ensemble for church services every Sunday. The styles of music at church range from 9th century plainchant to Gospel and from classical to contemporary.
For me, music is a lifelong journey. There is always something more to learn about managing the instrument, or about music itself. Every year I set time aside to attend a class or workshop, or to take private lessons. Academically, I'm interested in music theory and practice during the period from 1550 to 1750, and also in the use of music in the early Church.
But, ultimately, in my soul, I'm a bluesman. My heart beats in 1/8 note triplets.
This web site is a way of sharing some of my musical activity over the last several years. There are samples from Home Cookin', a three piece acoustic band, along with two other groups that I've played with recently. There are photos of the church where I play, and almost two hours of blues, folk, and church music samples. There are also links to some interesting bass and music places, and a few listserve articles.
I hope you enjoy your visit here.
